Lucky’s Tale is the closest you’ll get to Super Mario Bros. in VR.
Originally released back in 2016 as a launch title for the Oculus Rift, Lucky’s Tale is considered an OG within the VR gaming community. Brought to us by Texas-based developer Playful Studios, this next-gen 3D platformer has you taking control of the titular Lucky Swiftail, a happy-go-lucky fox, and embarking on a daring rescue mission in search of your best friend, Piggy.
The game features a healthy combination of 3D platforming, exploration, and combat. Similar to a standard third-person platforming game, you view the action primarily from a god-like perspective and control your avatar using the joysticks and buttons on your Touch controllers. That said, the game does offer several VR-specific interactions. At certain points in the game, for instance, you’re tasked with using your Touch controllers to aim and fire projectiles at specific enemies and objects.
Today, the company released a carefully crafted remaster of the original 2016 game developed specifically for the Oculus (Meta) Quest 2. The game features a variety of major updates, from improved visuals, refined player movements, additional challenges, and more.
The following is a full list of Lucky Tale’s key features (as provided by Playful Studios):
- Updated lighting, rendering, and remixed audio.
- Refined player movement and the new character model from Lucky’s latest adventure, New Super Lucky’s Tale.
- Diverse levels featuring lush swamps, underwater ruins, deep catacombs, active volcanoes, secret foxholes, boss fights, and more.
- Headset tracking for aiming, throwing, finding hidden items; touch controls for interacting with Lucky and menus.
- Additional timed-based and collectathon challenges that reward replays.
- Designed for all ages and skill levels.
After spending just a few hours with the game, I can say with confidence that Lucky’s Tale is easily one of the most entertaining VR platformers available on the Quest 2. Whether it be the eye-catching visuals, fluid gameplay mechanics, or inventive character design, Lucky’s Tale is a platform-lovers dream.
Lucky’s Tale is available now for $19.99 on Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 headset.
