“VR for console is not a focus for us” reiterates the company after a localization bug kickstarted rumors online.
Earlier this week, select Xbox users in Italy were treated to a series of surprise messages referencing an update for a VR headset which has since resulted in an avalanche of rumors and speculation surrounding Microsoft’s current VR efforts.
First reported by IGN Italy, these messages appeared for several Italian Xbox users while attempting to install the new Xbox Wireless Headset to their Xbox Series X or Series S consoles, at which point they were greeted with a message stating “The VR headset needs to be updated” followed by “An update for the VR headset is available” and “Update VR headset.”
Naturally, this lead to an influx of rumors surrounding potential VR support for the recently-released next-gen console. Unfortunately, it appears as though Microsoft is still in no rush to enter the VR market.
While speaking with The Verge in regards to the ongoing speculation, an official Microsoft representative squashed any hope of VR functionality coming to the Xbox platform in the near future, stating, “The copy in this error message is inaccurate due to a localization bug,” and that “VR for console is not a focus for us at this time.”
Despite the success of the Oculus Quest and PlayStation VR, Microsoft has remained continuously skeptical of VR technology, opting instead to monitor the current landscape while continuing to focus its efforts on content accessible via the TV. In February of 2020, Xbox head Phil Spencer reiterated the companies interest in VR while tempering expectations about potential support.
