VR breathes new life into the legendary 90’s board game.
Catan VR, a modern adaptation of the original 1995 board game Settlers of Catan is finally available on Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 headsets.
Originally released back in March of 2018 on the Oculus Go, Rift, and Samsung Gear VR, Catan VR on the Oculus Quest offers the same addictive board game experience you know and love, immersing you in a captivating virtual rendition of Klaus Teuber’s award-winning multiplayer strategy game. For those unfamiliar with the 1995 classic, Settlers of Catan, otherwise referred to as Settlers or Catan, has you playing the role of a settler tasked with establishing settlements throughout the fictional island of Catan. This can be done by a variety of means, including trading resources with other players, upgrading cities, and stealing resources.
Catan VR brings that same action to the Oculus Quest, allowing you and up to three other players the chance to duke it out for eternal glory via “invite-a-friend” and online multiplayer matchmaking. Cross-platform support allows you battle other players on Rift/Rift S, Go, and Samsung Gear VR. Those looking for a solo experience can take on AI opponents trained by Klaus Teuber himself.
Whether you’re a longtime fan of the series or simply a lover of multiplayer strategy games, Catan VR is a must-play on the Oculus Quest/Quest 2. From the custom Catan-themed environment and easy-to-use motion controls to the addictive tabletop gameplay, Catan VR is a perfect example of a VR board game done right. Not only does the original board game experience translate perfectly to the VR format, but it’s also enhanced by it, immersing you in the world of Catan.
Catan VR is so good on the Oculus Quest it makes me wonder what other classic board games would translate well to the VR format. Imagine a partnership between Oculus and Hasbro to bring legendary multiplayer hits like Battleship, Clue, and Mall Madness Mouse Trap to Oculus headsets. VR renditions of the above-mentioned classics could attract a whole new demographic of users to the Oculus platform while at the same time exposing younger generations to these historic games.
Now more than ever, friends and family need a way to connect with one another remotely. VR releases of classic board games could be an excellent way for loved ones to connect in a more meaningful way. With the right catalog of VR board games, the family game night can happen anytime anywhere, regardless of location.
Are there any other beloved tabletop games you’d love to play on VR headsets? Hungry Hungry Hippos? Chutes and Ladders? Clue?
Catan VR is available now on Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 headsets for $14.99.
