Microsoft Flight Simulator will receive a standalone sequel on PC and Xbox Series X|S in 2024, though Asobo Studio didn’t confirm official PC VR support.
Built within a “significantly evolved” Asobo Studio engine, an official FAQ confirms Flight Sim 2024 will be a “standalone simulator and the next-generation sequel” to the previous Microsoft Flight Simulator. “This brand-new simulator is designed to take advantage of the latest technologies,” says Microsoft. There’s no mention of PC VR support yet, though considering 10% of users play the 2020 edition exclusively in VR, we’d be surprised to see it dropped.
Flight Sim 2024’s announcement doesn’t mean support for the previous game is ending, either. “We will continue to deliver our Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) Roadmap which has content ranging from Aircraft and Avionics Updates, Sim Updates, City and World Updates,” the team confirms in the FAQ. Current aircraft and airports will remain supported in Flight Sim 2024, alongside previously bought Marketplace add-ons with “very few exceptions.”
That’s not all we learned during the Xbox Showcase. For those playing the current game, Microsoft revealed a Dune crossover in the works, letting you fly directly over the desert planet Arrakis in “an authentically detailed House Atreides Ornithopter.” That’s available for free on November 3, which coincides with the release of Dune: Part Two.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 arrives next year on Windows 10/11, Steam, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming via Game Pass Ultimate. We’ve contacted Microsoft for official comment on VR support and will update this page once we learn more.
