While the mod itself is free, you will need to own a copy of the game in order to play.
The Half-Life 2: VR Mod launched in public beta on Steam earlier this week, allowing those with a headset to play Valve’s near-perfect first-person shooter game from start to finish in VR.
The game features everything from room-scale movement and comfort options to motion controls and two-handed weapon handling with support for manual reloading.
The Half-Life 2: VR Mod is available to download now on PC VR headsets such as the HTC Vive, Valve Index, and HP Reverb. You can also play on the Meta Quest and Meta Quest 2 via Oculus Link, AirLink, or Virtual Desktop. Here’s how to get started:
First, download and install Steam on your VR-ready PC followed by SteamVR if you haven’t already. You’ll also need a copy of the original Half-Life 2. You don’t need to install the game, just own a copy on your Steam account (Steam’s Family Share is unfortunately not an option).
If you meet the aforementioned requirements, Half-Life 2: VR Mod will be available as a free download on its official Steam page. From here, all you need to do is connect your VR headset to your PC, run SteamVR, and launch the mod. Once you’re in the game, you can adjust your comfort settings for the ideal experience.
The developers have also introduced several features designed specifically for VR. This includes a dedicated radial weapons wheel for easier item management, laser sights, a 3rd-person vehicle camera, and over-the-shoulder ammo storage.
Moving forward, the developers plan on introducing additional improvements to the HL2VR mod as well as VR support for Half-Life 2: Episode One and Half-Life 2: Episode Two. There’s also interest in bringing VR support to other Valve games.
“We’re focusing on Half-Life 2 and its Episodes right now,” said the team. “Portal 1 is the only other Valve title that is a viable option right now for multiple reasons, and while we do hope to make it happen, it won’t happen for quite some time.”
Half-Life 2: VR Mod is available now for free on PC VR headsets and Meta Quest 2 (AirLink or Virtual Desktop) via Steam. As mentioned previously, you will need to own a copy of the original game in order to play. Half-Life 2 is currently available for $9.99 on Steam.
