One of the most famous video games of all time returns as an immersive AR experience for smart devices.
In celebration of the 45th anniversary of the iconic 1978 video game SPACE INVADERS, developer Taito Corporation and Google this week announced the launch of SPACE INVADERS: World Defense, an augmented reality (AR) mobile game available now on iOS and Android devices.
Much like the original arcade classic, this location-based mobile experience tasks you with defending Earth from waves of alien invaders hell-bent on world domination. This is where the similarities end, however, as SPACE INVADERS: World Defense makes use of ARCore and Geospatial API to blend virtual elements with your real-world environment.
According to Google, enemies will appear from behind nearby buildings and landscapes and react to real-world conditions in real time. This includes everything from your local time and weather to your physical location. You can also discover new Space Invaders and power-ups by simply exploring the real world. Of course, you can always just kick back and capture a few AR selfies.
“AR is blending the physical and digital worlds, transforming the way people shop, learn, play and interact with content,” said Stevan Silva, senior product manager at Google, in an official release. “Brands and creators can use AR to bring their content closer to people and help them experience the world in a whole new dimension.”
“We recently announced Geospatial Creator which lets developers, creators, and animators create and publish immersive location-based AR experiences easily, without the need to code, and in the tools they already know and love: Unity and Adobe Aero,” he added.
