Meta today announced that Roblox, the immensely-popular online video game platform, is coming to Meta Quest VR headsets.
In an official blog post, the company revealed that an open beta will be available on Quest 2 and Quest Pro in the “coming weeks” via App Lab, a virtual distribution platform for games and apps not officially approved by Meta. This will allow developers to experiment and fine-tune their Roblox VR experiences before the game goes live on the Meta Quest Store.
According to Meta, Roblox will be automatically publishing select experiences so players have their choice of VR content from day one of the open beta. The Meta Quest version will also be cross-compatible with existing platforms, allowing you to meet up with friends on Xbox, iOS, Android, and PC (so long as you’re at least 13 years old).
“On average, more than 66 million users log into Roblox every day, with a community that spans mobile devices (both iOS and Android), desktops, and Xbox, and we can’t wait to add Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, and (coming soon) Quest 3 to the mix,” said Meta in their official blog update.
It’s worth noting that Roblox already supports PC VR headsets and features a number of entertaining experiences designed specifically for VR. Our personal favorite is “VR Hands,” a hilarious cross-platform sandbox experience that allows you to interact with other players as a virtual giant.
The game’s arrival on Meta Quest headsets will only further encourage the development of original VR content for the platform. That said, it’ll be interesting to see how Roblox VR attempts to coexist with Horizon Worlds, a social VR platform created by Meta that’s also popular with younger players.
