Lace-up your basketball shoes!
Gym Class is partnering with the National Basketball Association to bring official NBA-licensed content to the popular VR basketball experience. According to an official release, NBA fans will be able to outfit their avatars in their favorite NBA team apparel as well as play on their team’s home court.
IRL Studios, the developer behind Gym Class, hopes that this partnership will help inspire basketball players around the world to connect with others through social sports. The game currently boasts one of the largest active VR communities and is the fourth most-rated experience in the Meta app store.
Part of this success comes from the game’s ability to provide a safe environment for users to play basketball from their living room. With this new collaboration, Paul Katsen, the company’s chief product officer, said that fans will be able to experience what it’s like to step on the court with their favorite team.
“Our collaboration with Gym Class will provide fans with a new way to express their NBA fandom and connect with each other,” said Adrienne O’Keeffe, head of digital consumer products at the NBA.
Gym Class offers various game modes, including multiplayer and AI-based passing drills and 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 competitive match-ups. Players can customize their very own full-body avatars with different cosmetics and dunk on fools with style thanks to realistic lower-body movements.
Other interesting features include:
- Public courts where you can play with strangers from around the world.
- Many multiplayer and AI bot game modes.
- Customizable skins and accessories for basic avatars.
- Online multiplayer-matchmaking
- Statistics, shot charts, and streaks.
- Invite-only private courts.
Gym Class also provides you with a variety of basketball performance metrics and allows you to explore the profiles of other players. There is a free-to-play mode and a premium version called Gym Class PRO. GM Mode offers additional content such as:
- A customizable private court. New Brooklyn environment.
- Personalizable full-body avatar.
- Skin and basketball.
O’Keeffe is excited to get this into your hands. “We look forward to NBA fans fully immersing themselves through this innovative gaming experience,” he said.
The NBA bundle, which will include all 30 NBA teams, will be available this winter season starting at $19.99.
