Hot Wheels: Rift Rally arrives next month on iOS, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
Coming soon, Hot Wheels: Rift Rally is a new mixed reality experience from Mattel that combines physical RC cars with “over-the-top” virtual environments. According to an official release, the game is being developed by Velan Studios, the same team behind Mario Kart: Home Circuit, another mixed reality racing experience available for Nintendo Switch consoles.
Hot Wheels: Rift Rally comes with a single Chameleon RC car, four Rift Gates, and a charging cable. Using the aforementioned gates, you can create your own custom tracks and race your RC car throughout the real world using an iOS device or PlayStation controller, depending on your platform of choice.
A camera mounted to the top of the RC car promises an immersive first-person perspective as you race. You’ll even have the ability to “digitally transform” your RC car with virtual liveries. According to Velan Studios and Mattel, the game features 140 variations to explore, including classic Hot Wheel cars like Bone Shaker, Gotta Go, Mach Speeder, and Twin Mill just to name a few.
The game offers two different ways in which to play. In Campaign mode, you’ll set up Rift Gates and navigate your way through various challenge maps, each with its own unique obstacles to overcome. In Stunt mode, you’ll ditch the gates and chain together burnouts, drifts, and wheelies in an attempt to earn the highest score possible.
“Our mission at Velan has always been to create breakthrough games that feel magical to players,” said Karthik Bala, CEO of Velan Studios, in an official release. “Our background combining digital and physical play taught us a lot about the mixed reality racing genre we invented, which we used to bring a transformational new experience to Hot Wheels: Rift Rally.”
“Velan Studios’ innovative game design and technology introduces a breakthrough play experience for Hot Wheels fans by transforming their home into the ultimate Hot Wheels track for their digital car collection,” said Mike DeLaet, global head of digital gaming at Mattel. “Hot Wheels: Rift Rally unlocks an exciting new kind of creative play for Hot Wheels fans by bridging physical and digital play in a way we’ve never seen before,” added Chris Down, chief design officer at Mattel.
Hot Wheels: Rift Rally will be available for purchase starting at $129.99 on March 14th, 2023 via the App Store and PlayStation Store. The company is also offering a Collector’s Edition ($149.99) that comes with a special edition RC car featuring black deco and gold accents as well as a limited edition McLaren Senna Hot Wheels die-cast car secured within a display case.
