We’re back with yet another list of unsettling VR games perfect for celebrating the Halloween season. The following experiences range from somewhat spooky to downright horrifying, offering a little something for everyone.
Here are five VR games to get you in the Halloween spirit:
AFTER THE FALL
- Price: $39.99
- Platforms: Quest 2, Rift, SteamVR, PlayStation VR
Brought to us by veteran developer Vertigo Games, the same team behind the iconic Arizona Sunshine series, After the Fall is the closest you’ll get to playing Left 4 Dead in VR. In this action-packed co-op shooter, you and three other players navigate post-apocalyptic Los Angeles in search of valuable supplies while battling hordes of frozen monstrosities.
The game features a variety of game modes, both cooperative and PvP, as well as weapon crafting, offering plenty in the way of replayability. Vertigo is also introducing updates regularly, which means new maps, modes, and threats.
PHASMOPHOBIA
- Price: $13.99
- Platform: SteamVR
You can’t talk about VR horror games without mentioning Phasmophobia. The unique multiplayer co-op game has you taking on the role of a paranormal investigator and exploring a variety of haunted locales in search of supernatural entities. Each player takes on a specific role on the team. Some players will explore spooky locations using a variety of ghost-hunting equipment, while others provide support from the van.
New updates have introduced significant improvements to the game, resulting in one of the most satisfying multiplayer co-op games currently available on PC VR headsets. There’s even cross-platform support, allowing you to play with non-VR players.
Cosmodread
Fans of Ridley Scott’s Alien or EA’s Dead Space series won’t want to miss this spine-chilling sci-fi horror game. The premise of Cosmodread simple: you’re trapped inside a damaged spacecraft and tasked with restoring key parts of the ship. The only things standing in your way are the legion of grotesque monstrosities lurking throughout the bowels of the vessel.
As you attempt to repair the ship, you’ll need to scavenge for ammo and supplies in order to fend off your bloodthirsty shipmates. Procedural generation technology ensures that no two playthroughs are ever the same by randomizing room layouts, hazards, and enemy positions.
The Twilight Zone
- Price: $19.99
- Platform: Quest 2
Dive head-first into three unstelling stories in this twisted adventure horror exerperience. The Twilight Zone features a unique combination of gameplay elements that includes stealth, shooting, and puzzles. One story follows a video game director who quickly discovers the the dangers of workplace cruelty. Another focuses on the lone survivor of an environmental apocalypse.
Whether you’re a fan of the hit 1960s television show or just mind-bending short stories in general, The Twilight Zone is a must-play on VR headsets.
Half-Life: Alyx
- Price: $59.99
- Platform: SteamVR
This may seem like a strange choice, but hear us out. Half-Life: Alyx features no shortage of unsettling locations to traverse and horrific enemies to kill. Whether it be the decrepid shantytowns filled with zombie headcrabs or Jeff, the fan-favorite mini-boss, HL:A has some genuinely scary moments throughout its expertly-crafted campaign.
Not to mention the mods. One talented developer went as far as to recreate Hideo Kojima’s now-infamous PT demo, which drew major attention for its simplistic yet brutally-effective design.
