The ViR controller may be the sleekest VR haptic gun we’ve seen yet.
First spotted by Yanko Design, the ViR controller promises improved gun haptics for VR headsets with its realistic force feedback and a unique ergonomic design. According to its creator, Tom Man Design, the device is meant to deliver an immersive shooting experience while remaining a charming addition to your living room. And I think the results speak for themselves.
Inspired somewhat by the PlayStation 5 controllers, the ViR haptic gun features a sleek, compact design resembling something you might find in a science-fiction film. Man claims that the controller features a dynamic trigger and actuators capable of simulating recoil. Everytime you fire the weapon, you feel a realistic kick-back, just like you would when operating a real firearm.
There are also front-facing stereo cameras as well as full thumb and finger-tracking. If, for example, you remove your finger from the trigger, so too will your virtual counterpart. While this may sound like a relatively minute feature, it’s these types of details—when added up—that can make or break immersion in games and apps.
Despite the impressive technology listed, there’s no guarantee the controller will ever see the light of day. According to the official website, the device was scheduled to launch sometime last year. Unfortunately, no additional information has been provided since.
Personally, I’d love to see more of these haptic devices make their way to the consumer VR market. While location-based VR providers have been hard at work introducing new and advanced hardware to their respective venues, at-home VR accessories are still relatively hard to come by.
