Experience the galaxy’s most dangerous sport for yourself.
Inspired by the classic Nintendo 64 game Star Wars Episode I: Racer, Podracer VR is a fan-made game that brings the popular fictional sport from the Star Wars universe to life in VR, allowing you to compete in high-speed races against AI opponents across a dangerous backwater planet. The project has been available for some time, but that doesn’t make it any less deserving of your attention.
Using your motion controllers, you’ll navigate your way around various environmental obstacles as well as other racers as you battle for first place. Similar to how the sport is portrayed in the original film, you’ll have the ability to trigger short bursts of speed as well as repair your vehicle after receiving damage. Your job as a pilot is to make it across the finish line first without flying straight first into a rock formation and winding up as bantha fodder.
Podracer VR has two different game modes to choose from. Realistic features the full motion of a podracer while Arcade offers a more comfortable experience for those prone to motion sickness. The game features two tracks and three different podracers at the moment, though the developer has expressed interest in adding courses and vehicles in the future as well as improvements to the cockpit user interface, the ability to damage your engines by overusing you boost, better sound design and VFX, as well as multiplayer functionality. That said the most recent update was quite some time ago.
Podracer VR is available for free on PC VR headsets here. Should you feel compelled you can also donate money in support of the developer. It should be noted that the project is a work-in-progress, so expect a few hiccups here and there. At the end of the day, however, this is an incredibly-entertaining VR racing game that’s sure to put a smile on even the most pessimistic Star Wars fans.
