Now we can devour the Gods together… in VR.
Developer FromSoftware has created a bit of a reputation for crafting brutally difficult video games, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and of course its iconic Dark Souls series. The company’s latest game, Elden Ring, is no exception, offering players the chance to explore a sprawling fantasy world that’s as beautiful as it is ruthless.
Today we learned that prolific VR developer Luke Ross is working on a VR mod of the game that will allow you to slay enemies across the Lands Between from a first-person perspective. Ross is the same mind behind the popular series of R.E.A.L mods that bring VR support to games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk 2077, and the Mafia trilogy just to name a few.
The story was first reported by PC Gamer. Like all of the R.E.A.L. mods listed above, the Elden Ring mod will not feature support for motion controls. As a result, you will need a gamepad or mouse & keyboard in order to play. According to Ross, we’ll also have the ability to play the game from the standard 3rd-person perspective while in VR, though he doesn’t recommend it.
While speaking to PC Gamer, Ross explained how he was able to mitigate motion sickness resulting from some of the faster movements featured in the game, such as rolling:
“When rolling or performing other scripted animations like the combat moves, the camera follows the character’s head (so its position changes) but it remains oriented correctly according to what your head is doing in real life. So the horizon will stay level and the world will always look stable.”
Ross says that his Elden Ring VR mod will be available hopefully by the end of the month. In order to play, you will need to own a copy of Elden Ring for PC and subscribe to Rosss’ R.E.A.L. VR Patreon (starting at $9.99 per month).
Elden Ring is available on PC for $59.99.
