This year’s nominees included hit games such as Demeo, Lone Echo II, and After the Fall just to name a few.
This past weekend, South by Southwest held its annual SXSW Gaming Awards Ceremony online, shining a spotlight on the best video game releases of the year across 12 separate categories, including “VR Game of the Year.”
This year’s competition was stacked with several noticeable experiences, from Resolution Games’ expertly crafted VR dungeon crawler Demeo to Vertigo Games’ fast-paced co-op shooter After the Fall. The following is a full list of the 2022 nominees:
- After The Fall by Vertigo Games
- Demeo by Resolution Games
- Lone Echo II by Ready at Dawn / Oculus Studios
- Resident Evil 4 VR by Armature Studio & Oculus Studios
- Song in the Smoke by 17-BIT
That said, there can only be one winner, and this year that honor went to Resident Evil 4 VR. A VR adaptation of the hit 2005 action-adventure game of the same name, RE4 VR puts you in the shoes of Leon S. Kennedy, a special agent for the US government tasked with rescuing the president’s daughter from a psychotic cult.
The game has been released on virtually every platform known to man, from modern consoles to smartphone devices. That said, Armature Studios’ VR adaptation takes the game in a bold new direction with custom motion controls and VR-specific interactions.
Last year RE4 VR took home the award for “VR Game of the Year” at The Game Awards 2021 as well as the Best Remake and Best AR/VR Game of the Year at the 11th Annual New York Game Awards in February.
