Could Metal Gear Solid VR be on the way?

Word is legendary video game developer and industry-darling Hideo Kojima might be working on his own VR game.

According to a tweet from OopsLeaks, a Twitter account dedicated to video game rumors and leaks, the award-winning game designer, director, producer, and writer is currently in possession of the recently-announced PlayStation VR2 and may be in development of a new indie project with Céline Tricart, an award-winning filmmaker specializing in VR, MR, and XR storytelling.

Citing “unconfirmed” sources, OopsLeaks claims that the game could be a “smaller” project developed by Kojima Productions, an original game studio founded by Kojima back in 2015 after a very public falling-out with Konami. This information lines up with a recent interview with Tokyo-based radio station J-Wave Radio during which Kojima shed some additional light on several upcoming projects.

During the interview, Kojima said the studio is working on an “edgy” project unlike anything we’ve played before. Not a traditional game, the project will feature a “different concept” than we’re familiar with. However, Kojima was quick to clarify that this is not an AR game, before cutting himself abruptly in order to avoid revealing too much.

While it’s true Kojima has no shortage of original IPs to pull from (Metal Gear Solid, Death Stranding, P.T.), I hope can’t help but hope that this upcoming VR experience, if real, features an original story and premise. That said, I certainly wouldn’t mind an official VR adaptation of P.T., though several fan-made creations have already done a phenomenal job at recreating the feel of the infamous horror experience.

Seeing as Kojima described the upcoming game as an “indy” project, however, we can most likely expect a more simplistic VR experience, if one at all.
