How much would you pay to live next to your favorite celebrity in the metaverse?
In case you’ve been living under a rock, NFTs are taking over the metaverse. At this point, it seems like everyone and their mother is investing in non-fungible tokens and cryptocurrency. This includes famed California rapper Snoop Dogg who—earlier this year—partnered with the blockchain-based 3D open-world game The Sandbox to launch his very own world inside the metaverse.
‘The Snoopverse’, as it’s being called, is a portion of The Sandbox metaverse owned and operated by Snoop Dogg. Earlier this month, 122 LANDs (plots of virtual land) and 67 Premium LANDs were put up for auction, allowing early investors the chance to purchase NFT property inside one of the fastest-growing metaverses. How much does this land cost exactly? Well, that depends. Much like the actual real estate market, location is everything. Take it from The Sandbox user P-Ape who, earlier this month, spent roughly $450,000 on a plot of virtual land right next to the prolific entertainer.

According to a report from Decrypt, this high-stakes investor spent 70,903.8222 SAND (the platform’s native token) to “live” in the shadow of Snoop’s virtual mansion. That’s a whopping $458,038 in real-world cash; not the most expensive NFT ever sold, but definitely one of the largest purchases made in Sandbox. The award for “Most Expensive” NFT goes to a digital collage of images by Beeple entitled Everydays: The First 5,000 Days, which sold for a jaw-dropping $63 million earlier this year.
According to The Sandbox, this month’s LAND sale was just the start for the Snoopverse. Additional plots of virtual property will be on sale in the future, with prices expected to rise as the popularity of NFTs and the metaverse continue to grow.
“We’re going to do multiple things with him,” said Mathieu Nouzareth, board member of The Sandbox, during an interview with Decrypt. “The next campaign is going to be around selling LAND with Snoop Dogg, and then we have this big concert. We sold 1000 tickets, and it’s coming early next year.”
“I’m always on the lookout for new ways of connecting with fans and what we’ve created in The Sandbox is the future of virtual hangouts, NFT drops, and exclusive concerts,” said Snoop Dogg in a press release. He even responded to the recent sale on Twitter saying “Won’t u be my neighbor.”
Those who purchased one of the 67 pieces of Premium LAND will receive three additional Snoop-themed NFTs: a Snoopverse Early Access Pass which grants you early access to future Snoopverse experiences, a massive Snoop Dogg statue, and a personal Brown Sugar car. If you missed the first wave, no worries. The Sandbox will be hosting additional auctions in the future.
