Compete against racers from around the world for a chance to win real-world cash.
Earlier this year, VR developer XOCUS launched a free demo of its lightning-fast VR racing game Z-Race on Oculus (Meta) Quest headsets. To celebrate the release, the company hosted a prize money tournament in which players could earn real cash by racing for the fastest times. Over the weekend, XOCUS launched the second part of its App Lab Cup, offering more cash prizes and a brand new track in which to compete.
From now until December 20th, Oculus Quest players can compete against one another for a chance to win a variety of cash prizes. Players will be competing on the brand new “Deep Dive” race track, which features a new layout to master and challenges to overcome.
Unlike the first tournament, players can only compete for a spot on the leaderboard a set number of times. That said, you are able to practice an unlimited amount of times. According to XOCUS, this is to ensure that every competitor is given a fair shot at the prize money. Speaking of prize money…
- 1st place: $300
- 2nd place: $200
- 3rd place: $150
- 4th-10th place: $50 each
Z-Race is unique in that pilots control their ships from a third-person perspective using a single VR controller. Racers compete asynchronously against one another and the fastest times are posted to a global leaderboard for all to see. In our early access review of the original PC VR release, we called Z-Race “an engaging racer that nails that core gameplay loop.”
Moving forward, the company looks to attract official sponsors in the hopes of expanding the Z-Race universe as well as future VR tournaments.
“Our goal is to make this tournament one of the first events to support a competitive eSports experience in VR,” said the company in an official release. “In the future, we seek to attract sponsors who will support the prize fund and provide players with an even bigger reward for winning. We also plan to expand upon the Z-Race universe, adding new experiences along the way. The future of the Z-Race depends on the success of the 2nd stage of the tournament.”
Z-Race is available now as a free demo on Oculus (Meta) Quest headsets and in Early Access on SteamVR headsets for $14.99.
