You’ve heard of Minecraft in VR, yes, but what about VR in Minecraft?

With 140 million active players worldwide, Minecraft is easily one of the most popular video games of all time. Mojang’s survival crafting game has players navigating a seemingly endless block-like world where they can explore, build, fight, play, and relax. A couple of years ago, an independent team released a mod called Vivecraft that allows you to play the full game in VR. In 2020, the PlayStation VR received official support for Minecraft on PlayStation 4.

But what about playing VR in Minecraft? In a video posted to Reddit this week, user classified39 shows off a custom mod that allows them to view a 360 virtual image complete with head tracking inside of Minecraft using Immersive Portals and Computercraft.

What started off as an experiment to determine a way to spawn portals without helper blocks/commands quickly snowballed into a series of posts. In the third and final post, entitled Did I just invent VR in Minecraft?, classified39 shares a video that shows him interacting with “VR technology” from inside of Minecraft (not to be confused with Minecraft in VR).

In the comments, classified39 was asked to explain how he was able to accomplish this incredible feat: “It was mostly accomplished using a command computer, a bunch of “exec.async”-s and “data.get”-s, and the built-in functions of immersive portals that few people actually use.” One Reddit user suggested using turtles behind the POV so that the player could interact with the world. Classified39 agreed: “Turtles are a good idea, I think I’ll try that once the update comes out that lets you use pocket computers in the off-hand (so you can basically have a remote control while still looking at what you are doing).”

A lot of work is still needed in order to deliver a comfortable VR experience inside Minecraft. That said classified39’s experiment is an incredible starting point. Looking to create your own VR technology in Minecraft? The developer recommends familiarizing yourself with specific Minecraft modding tools.

“If you want to develop a mod like this, I would recommend looking at IChun’s G.L.A.S.S. Mod, which allows for some pretty great CCTV-kinda stuff, but is only available in 1.12.2. I would totally use that mod if someone brought it up to 1.16.5 or higher.”

Moving forward, it’ll be interesting to see just how far creators can take this new mod. Imagine slaying zombies in The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners or slashing bricks in Beat Saber inside of Minecraft! And what about location-based AR games like Pokemon GO and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite? The potential for fun is endelss.
