“Rec Rally” is basically Mario Kart: Double Dash in VR and I couldn’t be more excited.
Social VR platform Rec Room is currently in the middle of Rec Con, a three-day celebration featuring a variety of Rec Room-themed panels, events, and concerts. There’s also a virtual event space filled with various art, cosplay, and over 200 individual booths to peruse at your leisure. As part of yesterday’s festivities, the team unveiled a new game mode, “Rec Rally.”
Available later this month on major VR headsets as well as iOS, Android, PS5, and Xbox Series X, “Rec Rally” introduces interactive vehicles to the game, allowing you to compete against up to five other players in fast-paced PVP rally races across a brand new race track environment. In addition to the driver, a second player riding tandem can interfere with the other racers using a variety of objects. It’s basically Mario Kart: Double Dash in VR.
This isn’t some fan project developed using the in-game creator tools. “Rec Rally” was custom-built by the Rec Room team as an official addition to their ever-growing catalog of multiplayer games. That being said, you will be able to access the buggies for your own creations using the maker pen. The interactive vehicles will launch in beta before seeing a full release.
Rec Room’s “Rec Rally” game mode will be available free on September 29th at 10 am PT via Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift, PC VR, PlayStation VR, iOS, Android, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. As is the case with existing Rec Room games, “Rec Rally” will support cross-play across all the aforementioned platforms.
Rec Con is happening now until September 26th. For more information on this years’ happenings visit here.
