Cloudhead Games expands the ‘Pistolverse’ with a new five-part campaign and a reworked modifier system.
Developer Cloudhead Games today launched two new updates for Pistol Whip, introducing new scenes, additional music, and a reworked modifier system to the popular VR rhythm shooter.
Available now on major VR headsets, the ‘Smoke & Thunder’ update introduces a five-part story-driven campaign featuring music from artists such as Bones UK and The Heavy. Whereas last years’ update Pistol Whip: 2089 offered a futuristic cinematic narrative complete with an ultra-cool synthwave soundtrack, ‘Smoke & Thunder’ transports you backward in time to the Old West where you’ll battle waves of ruthless bandits and dastardly outlaws using your trusty six-shooter and shotgun.
The developers describe the campaign as “The Magnificent Seven meets John Wick,” so expect plenty of exciting shootouts as you gun down bands of faceless thugs while searching for your missing sister. Like Pistol Whip: 2089, ‘Smoke & Thunder’ features five new scenes in total.
In addition to the new campaign, Cloudhead Games has also launched a reworked modifier system that allows you to better personalize your Pistol Whip experience. The ‘Styles’ update introduces additional customization options, including invincibility, dual wield, and the ability to utilize special weaponry such as 2089’s four-shot burst pistol on any level. You can create your own style, or choose from a rotating selection of featured styles hand-picked by the developer.
Both of today’s updates are available free to existing players. Beginning August 15th, the price of the base game will increase to $29.99 (originally $24.99) to reflect the newly added content.
“Pistol Whip is growing! Pushing Pistol Whip in new directions while expanding the ‘Pistolverse’ is something we are very proud of,” said Cloudhead Games CEO Denny Unger in an official release. “For those that may have missed out at launch, we want them to experience what all the fuss is about for themselves. With our biggest update ever, a new narrative campaign, endless replayability with the new Styles System—there’s never been a better time to experience the Pistol Whip difference.”
Pistol Whip is available now for $24.99 on Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift, SteamVR, and PlayStation VR headsets. As previously mentioned, the price will increase to $29.99 beginning August 15th, so you’ll want to move quickly if you don’t want to pay that additional $4.99.
