The legendary fantasy-adventure franchise has been reimagined for Oculus Quest headsets.
Back in the early days of gaming, before big-budget shooters and complex RPGs, there were point-and-click games, digital adventures in which players interacted with the in-game world using a point-and-click interface.
1987’s Shadowgate was one such title, taking Apple Macintosh players on a dark fantasy adventure through a magical castle riddled with horrific creatures, complex puzzles, and deadly traps. As the “seed of prophecy”, players are tasked with stopping an evil warlock from summoning a world-ending monstrosity. The game has earned a bit of a reputation for the many different ways a player can meet their end, including being eaten by a shark or sucked into outer space.
Available this October on Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 headsets, Shadowgate VR: The Mines of Mythrok aims to bring that same nerve-wracking dungeon crawler experience to VR. The game is brought to us by Virginia-based game company Zojoi, which was founded by two of the creators of the original Shadowgate, so you know you’re getting an authentic experience. That being said, this ain’t your parents’ dungeon crawler.
Shadowgate VR ditches the point-and-click interface in favor of immersive motion controls, allowing you to interact with the in-game world using your Oculus Quests’ Touch controllers. As you explore the shadowy hallways and magical chambers of the legendary “Living Castle”, you’ll battle a variety of monsters—from gigantic spiders to haunt wraiths—using a sorcerer’s wand and magical shield.
Along the way, you’ll be joined by your trusty raven Odin, who can assist you in disarming traps and solving riddles. Other unique activities include high-speed minecart riding and searching for hidden artifacts.
“After finding massive success on the NES, the game was subsequently ported or reimagined to over 15 platforms,” states Zojoi on their website. “Unlike its predecessors, SGVR is a brand-new VR adventure created exclusively for the Oculus Quest. SGVR does what no other Shadowgate adventure could do – allow the player to actually play and be immersed WITHIN our fantasy world!”
Shadowgate VR: The Mines of Mythrok launches on Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 headsets on October 7th.
