Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond’s heart-breaking doc wins the Oscar for Best Documentary (Short Subject).
Developer Respawn Entertainment made history during last night’s 2021 Academy Awards after a short film included as part of its VR WWII shooter Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond took home the award for Best Documentary (Short Subject). By all accounts, this marks the first time a video game developer has won an Academy Award.
“We’re over the moon about Colette’s Best Documentary (Short Subject) Oscars win tonight,” said Respawn via Twitter. “From Vince, Peter, and all the rest of us at Respawn, we are humbled and honored.”
Released by The Guardian in partnership with Oculus and Respawn, Colette is one of several short documentaries available as part of the “Gallery” in Medal of Honor: Above And Beyond. The 24-minute film tells the story of Colette Marin-Catherine—a former French Resistance fighter—as she visits Germany for the first time in 74 years to visit the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp where her brother was killed.
Needless to say, Colette features an absolutely gut-wrenching story, one that offers a closer look at the horrific realities of war.
You can watch the entire 24-minute documentary yourself via YouTube or by playing Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, available now on Oculus and SteamVR headsets for $59.99.
