Team up with friends to explore haunted catacombs in Resolution Games’ upcoming turn-based fantasy roguelike.
Developer Resolution Games (Blaston, Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale, Angry Birds VR) today announced the official release date for its upcoming VR fantasy roguelike game Demeo.
Available May 6th on major VR headsets, Demeo will have you teaming up with friends to explore the darkest bowels of an ancient Elven Necropolis in the hopes of rescuing The Mad Elven King, Taking on the role of one of four champions, each with their own unique abilities, you and your friends will need to work together to survive a never-ending onslaught from the Kings unholy armies.
There’s the frighteningly accurate archer, the powerful sorcerer, the ruthless assassin, and the intimidating guardian. Similar to an actual board game, players take turns moving around the map and initiating attacks by rolling the die and activating special abilities via an in-game card system.
Based on the extended gameplay trailer, Demeo looks somewhat like a combination of Gauntlet and Dungeons and Dragons; two classic RPG games I certainly wouldn’t mind experiencing in VR.
“We knew that RPG fans were going to love Demeo, but we had no idea just how excited they would be until we released its gameplay reveal trailer last month,” said Tommy Palm, CEO of Resolution Games in an official release.
“It has been so fun hearing from players all over the world about how excited they are to get their hands on the game and experience their beloved tabletop game nights again with their friends after a long year apart. Demeo is going to be unlike anything available in VR today, and we can’t wait for players to take on the dungeons of Demeo on May 6.”
Demeo arrives on Oculus Quest/Quest 2, Oculus Rift/Rift S, and SteamVR headsets on May 6th for $29.99. The game can also be played in 2D via a standard desktop with support for crossplay.
Chatting with developer Resolution Games, we learned more about the inspiration behind this ambitious multiplayer RPG experience: “I wanted to simplify the ruleset of Dungeons and Dragons; that type of proper role-playing game,” said Palm while speaking to VRScout. “A lot of it is about the conversation that you have and the fun of rolling a bad die at a bad moment when everything is dependent on it.”
“We’re obviously big fans of games like Gauntlet, where you typically have different roles and you need to collaborate in order to make the most of [the game]. They will be very different from each other in order to create a dynamic where, if somebody runs off, say your tank, it creates a very different situation.”
When asked about his favorite gameplay mechanics, Palm said, “We’re very happy about the implementation of cards and how that turned out; that gives the game a lot of depth. We can do so many different things with those cards. I mean, one of the great things with video games, in general, is that you can present information at the time when you need it so you’re not super overwhelmed; you can gradually introduce more and more complexity. And that’s something that I feel we have managed to do quite well.”
