The award-winning VR puzzler returns later this year with new spy-themed missions.
VR/AR development company Schell Games today revealed the highly-anticipated sequel to its multiple award-winning spy-themed VR puzzle game I Expect You To Die.
Available later this year on select VR headsets, I Expect You To Die 2: The Spy & Liar will have you once again stepping into the role of a secret agent as you set out on a series of daring missions that will put your finely-tuned spy skills to the test. Based on the new trailer and promotional imagery, this includes everything from redirecting deadly lasers using a fancy dinner cloche and dodging giant pendulum axes to navigating complex machinery and defending yourself from crossbow fire.
*Spoilers Ahead*
The Spy & Liar kicks off after the events of the third and final DLC, “Death Engine.” Our protagonist, having secretly survived a massive explosion after successfully sabotaging Zoraxis’ deadly space laser (please go check this out if you haven’t already), is once again tasked with thwarting the power-hungry madman. This new adventure sees our hero going undercover to investigate new intelligence received by the Agency in an effort to discover Zoraxis’ latest plans for world domination.
“The community spoke, and we listened. We’re thrilled to continue building upon the success of I Expect You To Die and give fans an opportunity to test their wits against the traps Dr. Zor has in store,” said Jesse Schell, CEO of Schell Games in an official release. “We were blown away by the positive response we received for I Expect You To Die, and we’re excited to create another title that contributes to our legacy of immersive and engaging virtual reality experiences.”
“In developing I Expect You To Die 2, we wanted to improve and expand upon the mechanics and characteristics fans enjoyed the most in the original virtual reality game,” added Charlie Amis, Project Director for I Expect You To Die 2. “New and returning players will experience new puzzles in fully immersive environments, complete with an in-depth storyline that makes the thrill of being an elite, super-spy a reality. We can’t wait for the community to play it.”
According to Schell Games, I Expect You To Die has generated over $6 million in revenue across all platforms (Oculus Rift/Rift S, Oculus Quest/Quest 2, SteamVR, PSVR), which isn’t all that surprising considering the overwhelmingly positive reception from both players and critics. The original VR puzzler even took home several awards, including the 2018 Official Selection for Cinequest VR Awards, the Immersive Perspective Awards, Indie MEGABOOTH 2017 Official Selection at PAX East 2017, and the 2015 Proto Awards; as well as multiple nominations.
As mentioned earlier, I Expect You To Die 2: The Spy & Liar is expected to launch sometime this year. No word yet on which headsets will be receiving official support.
Those looking to catch up on the action before launch can pick up the original for 20% off on January 28th on Oculus Quest/Quest 2 as part of Oculus’ Daily Deal promotion. There will also be a bundle available from January 29th to February 5th that includes Schell Games’ VR sword fighting game Until You Fall.
