Computer vision and AR technology bring Mount Kilimanjaro to life in your living room.
Google has partnered with Red Bull TV to launch a brand new AR-enhanced on-demand video experience following Canadian-born climber and paraglider pilot Will Gadd as he scales the legendary ice caps of Mount Kilimanjaro in an effort to show the devastating impact of climate change on the rapidly-changing environment.
It was back in 2014 that Gadd first discovered the surprising rate at which the ice surrounding Kilimanjaro was melting. Earlier this year, he returned to the dormant volcano to document further environmental changes, this time recording his efforts for a new documentary, The Last Ascent. Available now via the Red Bull TV app, the 45-minute short film has you joining Gadd and his expedition team as they make their way across the Tanzanian mountain face while recording the dramatic environmental changes.
Those watching on a Chromecast with Google TV or an Android TV OS device can immerse themselves even further in the thought-provoking documentary with a captivating AR experience powered via your smartphone. After downloading the Red Bull TV app on your Android or iOS device, you can scan your TV while watching the film to unlock additional 3D video content. Brought to life by AR pioneer eyecandylab, the app uses computer vision technology to recognize what’s happening on-screen and deliver relevant AR content, including memories and photographs of Gadd’s original 2014 expedition.
You can check out the full documentary now via the Red Bull TV app. You’ll need both the mobile app (available on iOS and Android) as well as a Chromecast with Google TV or Android TV OS device in order to access the AR elements. A full list of compatible devices can be found here.
Gadd is scheduled to speak at the UN on Friday, December 11th as part of International Mountain Day.
